Lake Taupo

Beautiful Lake Taupo has lots to offer the traveller to New Zealand. The perfect place to base yourself for a few days.
Lake Taupo is itself a crater to one of the biggest volcanoes in world history just 1,800 years ago. This eruption was possibly recorded as far away as Rome and China where writings tell of the sun in the east being blood like,  lacking in light and the appearance of the heavens being ablaze.
Trout fry were introduced to this lake 100 years ago and some call it trout heaven.
Huka falls Are just north of Lake Taupo five minutes away as is the wairaki geothermal valley. Keep on going in this direction to reach Rotorua which is about an hours drive on state highway 5 or head north to Auckland on State Highway 1.

The famous Huka Falls

Huka Falls would have to be one of the most photographed waterfalls in New Zealand. They are on the mighty Waikato river near the outlet of Lake Taupo. 220,000 litres of water flow over these falls per second.
Huka jet
offer a fantastic thrill to the base of the falls lasting a half hour.
The craters of the moon is a geothermal park managed by DOC and are free to enter. Inside the park you will find hot pools, mud pools and steam vents. This area was formed in the 1950s as a result of the nearby Wairaki Geothermal Power Station lowering the underground water levels and reducing steam resistance. For more info on this park and lots more info about local volcanic activities have a look at
this site. Well worth the time.

Going south on highway 1 takes you around this beautiful lake towards Wellington heading past Turangi and National Park.
