Nestled at the
head of Queen Charlotte Sound and at the top of the South Island lies
Picton.
If you cross Cook Strait on one of the ferries, this is where you will disembark
and set foot
on the South Island. Picton is a well serviced town and will cater
to your every need.
Waikawa
Bay near Picton
Picton's
locality makes it an ideal place to spend a few days exploring. One such excursion
could well be a drive through Waikawa Bay over the hill to some beautiful bays of
Port Underwood
and back to Picton
via Rarangi and Tuamarina.
There are several walks in close proximity to Picton with splendid views of
Queen
Charlotte sound and the local area. Picton is also in the Marlborough sounds
with it's
1500kms of shoreline. If you are feeling adventurous try
The Queen Charlotte Track This will clock up 70 km one way. Search their site for transport options unless
you want to
tramp there and back again.
Another facet of Picton is the maritime history and the preservations of
The Edwin Fox
and The Echo.
After you have recharged your
batteries you should be ready to hit the road again
and head South down the East
Coast or West towards Nelson and down the West Coast.
Heading south will bring you to the wine making district of
Marlborough and into
Blenheim.
The
sunniest place in New Zealand is here.
