 Port Underwood

If you have a few hours spare in Picton. This is one way of filling them in and looking at some lesser known sights. From Picton take the Waikawa road to start your trip. The first bay is Waikawa which would be nice for a dip in the summer. Next is Karaka Point from where views of Queen Charlotte Sound can be had. After Karaka Bay you start to climb quite a steep hill. Keep on going because the rest of the trip is well worth the effort.
Port Underwood can be viewed from the top. There is a car park here to pull into and admire the scenery. Continue on down the hill and the next bay is Tom Crane Bay.  A wonderful spot to stop for a break and a cup of tea if you remembered to bring a thermos. There are no shops for the main part of the trip. The next bay is Ocean Bay. This was once a whaling station in days gone by. The whale pot is a memento of those days gone by when this area was quite popular for the whalers. A nice place for a picnic lunch and maybe a swim.

Back on the road we come to Robin Hood Bay which is another sandy bay.

Later we come to Whites Bay where the first Cook Strait Crossing of a telephone cable landed in the South Island.
This is a safe swimming beach and in season there is a lifeguard patrol on duty. There is also a camping ground here
and reservations can be made with
D.O.C.

  Rarangi

After Whites Bay go over a couple more hills and check out the view at the top above Rarangi. Descend back down to sea level again and continue to Tuamarina at the Koromiko Cheese factory. Turn right onto State  Highway one again then back into Picton. This trip is only about sixty km but if you wanted, it would be a pleasant day trip. I have done it and recommend it thoroughly. It would be possible on a pushbike but some of the hills would be hard going and there is a stretch of gravel road to contend with.

Enjoy.
