Going south from
Towai, there
is a turn off at Whakapara this puts you on the Old Russell Road which
will take you on an alternative route north via Helena Bay,
Oakura,
Whangaruru,
Bland Bay,
Rawhiti, and
Russell.
From Whakapara the next turn left leads to
Whananaki. But heading south Hikurangi is the first town in the Whangarei
District you will come too. Hikurangi is an old coal mining town. The
museum
is a good place to look
up the history of this town. The Sandy Bay, Tutakaka road leaves Hikurangi at
the north end of town. This is an alternative route to Whangarei via the coast
with many bays along the way.
There are 26 bays on the Tutukaka
Coast. You enter
Whangarei
at Tikipunga by the Whangarei Falls. A few local walks are
here.
For a quicker trip into Whangarei, just stay on the main road and in ten minutes
you will be there. Whangarei is New Zealand's northernmost city with about 40,000
population. There is a lot to see and do around Whangarei, Stay a few days to
explore this area to the full. Back on the road again, Ruakaka is a nice beach
settlement and tours of the visitor centre at Marsden Point Oil Refinery are
well patronized. After Ruakaka on highway one Waipu is a small town with lots
to offer the visitor. Here another coast drive is recommended going through
Waipu Cove, Lang's Beach and
Mangawhai Heads
coming out at
Kaiwaka. Going south
from Waipu The Brynderwyn hills are crossed, bringing you back to the start
of the Northland Round Trip.
